Before Christmas of 2017, I was asked by RNZ if I wanted to assemble a playlist of my favourite songs to play on the radio along with being interviewed about my work.
“Hell yes!” Was my rapid reply. I’ve listened to countless episodes of the BBC’s Desert Island Discs and Kim Hill’s Playing Favourites on her RNZ Saturday morning show and have always wanted to assemble my own playlist.
I spent a week going through Spotify looking for the 5 – 6 songs I love, but which also wouldn’t upset RNZ listeners too much and that also fit with the theme for the series – road trip music. That was easy enough to sort out, most of my favourite music is well suited to road trips.
The interview in early December 2017 with RNZ’s Megan Whelan was well-timed as I’d just handed in my resignation from the Science Media Centre. So we covered a lot of ground in science, technology, the state of the media etc and of course, discussed the tracks I selected.
It was a very enjoyable experience and while I had some people perplexed at my music choices, I didn’t care a jot. This was my playlist, these songs mean something to me and in a couple of cases, this was probably the first time those tracks were playing on New Zealand radio so I felt I was breaking new ground!
